SET APART FOR LIFE AND HEALTH
Some people are thrown off by the word holy when we talk about the holy Communion. To them, it feels antiquated and maybe even irrelevant. But did you know that to be “holy” simply means to be “set apart for God” and to be uncommon?
This speaks of the special nature of the Communion. Every time you partake of the holy Communion, you are allowing the Lord to set you apart from the world, and allowing Him to have a private time of intimacy and communion with you! Look at what God did for the children of Israel when the plagues came upon the land of Egypt. He declared:
“And in that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, in which My people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there, in order that you may know that I am the LORD in the midst of the land. I will make a difference between My people and your people.”
In the same way, when you have divine insights on the power and significance of the holy Communion, the Lord Himself sets you apart and makes a difference between you and the people of the world. That means you are not like the people of the world.
That means it may be common for the people of the world to catch the “common flu,” or common for people in a particular age demographic to experience certain symptoms or to develop certain conditions. But you don’t have to accept any “common” ailments because God has set you apart to be uncommon.
In a world that is decaying and dying of illness, He has paid the price for you to be uncommonly healthy, whole, and healed. While the rest of the world can weaken with age, the Bible declares that “as your days, so shall your strength be” (Deut. 33:25), and that even as you advance in age, you can return to the days of your youth (Job 33:25).
I pray that over you right now: as your days increase, may your strength and your health also increase, and may the Lord return the days of your youth to you, and cause your flesh to be young like a child’s. Amen!

History Today: February 27
On February 27, 1776, during the American Revolution, the Battle of Moore’s Creek Bridge was fought near Wilmington, North Carolina. There were three “types” of Americans at the beginning of the American Revolution: Patriots sympathetic to the American cause, those who were undecided and simply wished to be left alone, and those who remained loyal to the British crown. Among these Loyalists were recent Scottish immigrants from the Highlands.
Many of these Scots had immigrated to the state of North Carolina because of geographic features like their native Scotland. At the start of the Revolution, they had no particular loyalty to their new country and, as a result, sided with the British. Many military companies of Loyalist Scots, outfitted in Highland garb, were formed in North Carolina and in early 1776 they set out against the Patriot elements in the state.
On February 27, several companies of Loyalists, totaling 1,600 men, met nearly 1,000 Patriots entrenched behind Moore’s Creek Bridge in southeast North Carolina. The Patriots had removed the majority of the bridge’s planks, leaving only two narrow strips of planks. Regardless, the bloodthirsty Highlanders were determined to charge the Patriot positions. The Highlanders were armed only with broadswords and were brutally cut down by Patriot cannon and musket fire. Thinking they faced a much larger Patriot force than they did, the Loyalists promptly surrendered. North Carolina would soon be under complete Patriot control and would become the first of the Thirteen Colonies to vote in favor of independence from Britain on April 12, 1776.
Also, on this day in U.S. history:
1827: The first Mardi Gras is celebrated in New Orleans.
1922: The Supreme Court unanimously votes to uphold the 19th amendment to the constitutions, women's right to vote.
1986: Debates from the U.S. senate are allowed to be televised on a trial basis.
Letter of Colonel William B. Travis Remembered From the Alamo
It all began during the end of February and early March 1836.
To the People of Texas & All Americans in the World:
Fellow citizens & compatriots—I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna—I have sustained a continual Bombardment & cannonade for 24 hours & have not lost a man. The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken—I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, & our flag still waves proudly from the walls.
I shall never surrender or retreat. Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch—The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily & will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days. If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country—Victory or Death.
William Barret Travis
Lt. Col. comdt
P.S. The Lord is on our side—When the enemy appeared in sight we had not three bushels of corn—We have since found in deserted houses 80 or 90 bushels & got into the walls 20 or 30 head of Beeves.
