History Today: February 16

On February 16, 1862, during the Civil War, General Ulysses Grant captured Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River in Tennessee. Fort Donelson was constructed early in the war by Confederate forces to control the Cumberland River, which led directly to the strategic city of Nashville and the heartland of Tennessee. Fort Donelson and its sister fort, Fort Henry, were the main strategic points in central Tennessee, and accordingly, Union forces in the region under General Grant knew they needed to control them. On February 6, Union troops captured Fort Henry following a devastating naval bombardment and rapidly proceeded toward Fort Donelson.

The Confederates rushed to reinforce Fort Donelson. Total strength was brought to over 20,000 men, positioned inside the fort and along its outer works. A rarity for the Civil War, the strength of the Union forces was less than that of the Confederates, coming in at around 15,000. Fighting began on February 13, when Union troops attempted to capture a Confederate battery on the outer works. The northern troops were unsuccessful in this particular engagement but succeeded strategically by convincing the Confederates that their force was much larger than it actually was.

On February 15, the real battle began. Grant tightened the noose around the fort by bringing in naval support on the river, and the Confederates attempted to break out. They attacked the Union right flank and center and were successful in pushing the northern men back. However, they pushed them too far. Grant saw a chance and launched a devastating attack on the weakened Confederate right, which had been drained of troops to attack the Union center. The Southern forces that remained fell back behind their entrenchments and decided reluctantly that they must ask for terms of surrender. Grant replied that no terms would be acceptable "except unconditional and immediate surrender.” A famous nickname was earned by Grant that day, Unconditional Surrender Grant. The majority of the Confederates complied with Grant’s demands, with the exception of a group of 5,000, who were able to launch a successful escape attempt. The Battle of Fort Donelson was a disaster for the Confederate cause. It gave the Union control of the Cumberland River and eventually Nashville, and it left Tennessee wide open to further invasion.

Also, on this day in U.S. history:

1840: Naval officer and explorer Charles Wilkes discovers Shackleton Ice Shelf in Antarctica.

1861: Abraham Lincoln stops his train on his way to Washington to thank 11-year-old Grace Bedell for her advice to grow a beard to gain more votes.

1964: The Beatles' make their second appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" from Deauville Hotel in Miami, Florida.
