That is what Audie Murphy, the most decorated soldier in WW2, did when he was 20 years old. He won the Medal of Honor for that heroic act.

Telling your men to retreat after the enemy scored a direct hit on your armored vehicle, then jumping on top of the burning vehicle to man the .50 caliber machine gun and killing or wounding over 50 enemy soldiers is pretty badass. Then, stopping because you literally run out of ammunition so you go back to your troops and lead them to safety is crazy badass.

That is what Audie Murphy, the most decorated soldier in WW2, did when he was 20 years old. He won the Medal of Honor for that heroic act.

That wasn't the only badass thing he did, he always seemed to be in the thick of it all. His biography notes:

In August 1944, Murphy's division moved to southern France as part of Operation Dragoon. It was there that his best friend, Lattie Tipton, was lured into the open and killed by a German soldier pretending to surrender. Enraged by this act, Murphy charged and killed the Germans that had just killed his friend. He then commandeered the German's machine gun and grenades and attacked several more nearby positions, killing all of the German soldiers there. Murphy was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions.

He is a real American hero.
